Nothing about Team Tournement ?

Ones again the organizaton dissapoint us ..

Updates???

Yesterday was the only day we could get the results "semi-live". The whole speech with "do it yourself better" is a lame excuse - there are lots of examples of better-organized events and much more visible online.

You have no excuse for the fact that we need to ask a "third party" - EuroGoTV - and find out the results MUCH sooner than here.

Let's say 300 results to process. Multiplied by 10 seconds it takes 3000 seconds, less than an hour. And that counts IF all the results come at the same time, which they don't. It's not hard, but it's true it takes more than picking nails :-)

With all due respect, the results after round 5 were available on Sunday only - both wall list and intranet. On Friday all we've had was "?" on the column of round 5.

Better assume criticism, it's the fastest way to progress.

Allen

Updates???

Dear Allen,

If you think this whole event was organized as an on-line event you are mistaken. Organizing a tournament for 500+ participants takes more than 300 times 10 seconds, less than an hour, each day. Give the organization some credit for everything that goes well instead of moaning that the results are not "semi-live". What specific need is there for the participants to follow every result "semi-live". The results of the top boards have been made available within a reasonable amount of time. I feel it is unreasonable to ask of the organization to pick up te results every half hour or so and process them "semi-live". With all due respect, give them some credit!!!

How much credit?

Thank you for answering, Zoutehond!

Just wanted to ask you... how much credit? :-) It's about midnight and I can imagine a bunch of hard working people counting MMS, SOS and everything in order to provide us with the latest results after round 8... COME ON GUYS, that's not even hilarious anymore!

Someone said something about the players there - do you think the players are better treated? The intranet pairing and results are not updated as well. All that I know is that at EVERY Go tournament I've been to there was respect shown to both players and supporters, respect in the form of results processed&announced fast and in a professional manner, respect in the form of clear instructions and directions for all the participants... and so on. I don't know how, but at a major event like EGC these were not a priority.

Don't tell me the officials don't have the ranking nor the pairing for tomorrow, at this late hour. Maybe they have fallen asleep aside the computer, as processing takes hours and hours and hours...

Don't bother to reply or excuse... I've seen and understood how it all goes here, no chance to improve anything with this kind of attitude.

Regards,
Allen

EGC has become more global than you think.

It attracts a lot of attention from all over the world. The interested parties want to know the results quickly to report to their local baduk players.
Unless the european organizers recognize that their work does not satisfy the world's audience, it would not grow to more international event.
Next time, the EGC board should check if the cadidate cities in bidding have real capacity to handle the "International Event".

welcome to 21th century

There's only one problem with your approach : in this epoch, the fact that "everything goes well" doesn't mean much in my opinion. You mean everyone should be happy that the tournament doesn't break into pieces and the games are still played ? I hope you're kidding ...
We're talking here about an European Championship, which is one of the most important European tournaments...
The fact that many people are closely watching this on the internet is a very important clue - if one was needed - regarding the huge interest of this tournament. Which is a very positive fact in my opinion, so the organizers should try to raise to the occasion and try to fulfill the public need - which is to have updates very quickly available online - instead of ignoring this need and complaining about all those request.
I don't know if any of the organizers has ever followed live/online any other sporting event, so I'll give you a couple examples :
- in tennis : big tournaments follow practically every game LIVE and ONLINE and POINT-BY-POINT !!!!!
- in football : even minor games are relayed with online live comments AS IT HAPPENS !!!! And I'm not even talking about big events like European Championships ...
- even boring events where nothing happens for hours - like in cycling, think Il Giro, Tour de France - are relayed with comments on the internet almost minute by minute !!!!
I'm aware that the EGC does not have the resources of the above sports, but these are the kind of events with which this tournament should compare to ... And come on ... don't give me "half an hour" is too much ... people are happy with semi-live and you're telling me that even this is too much to ask ?!
You ask what's the specific need to follow "semi-live" ... indeed, the specific need is to follow it live, but lacking this people are happy even with semi-live and we're talking about only RESULTS, not games themselves... Have you ever wondered what makes people get in a large number on KGS/IGS when big games are relayed live there ?! Why don't they just wait a couple of months for the next Go World or whatever ?!
What you're saying is like telling a football fan : why do you listen to the game on the radio, you can read the result from the newspaper tomorrow ... I don't know if you realize the enormity of this suggestion ...
I think it's the first time I personally notice this fan behavior from the Go audience and I think it's very important and the organizers should be very happy about it and very eager to respond positively to this demand !
I'm sure the organizers are doing a good job all-around, but with all due respect, this internet website is more important than you think and it should be handled in a more serious manner ...
Not to mention : I bet that there are a lot of computer/internet experienced people at the congress that would be happy to give a hand in making the semi-live update work, why don't you ask for some volunteers if you need some ?

Patience

I'm one of those who log into the website to see the latest results. If they are not there yet I haven't noticed any skies falling down, and I haven't had to resort to tranquilisers.

In contrast, I hear from people there - the ones who have actually paid for the privilege - that they seem to be having a good time. It was for them that the event was organised, by volunteers who spend up to a year in preparation. Even if some things go wrong at the actual event, they are often easy to excuse.

Comparison with professional sports like tennis and football is just plain silly.

Of course, a case may fairly be made for putting more emphasis on website presentation in future EGCs, but that has to be planned well in advance, included in the specification and not met before valid criticism can be levelled.

The criticism above reminds me of the American who said, "God grant me patience - AND I WANT IT NOW!!"

John Fairbairn

They are paying for the great event

The payment for the event is not only for them to enjoy on the spot.
It is for participating in the occasion which attracts others' attention.
The fee does not only cover their presence there for all other auxillary effect.
Please do not support less than good organization for the sake of your personal friendship with the organizers
It is after all an official thing. You might as well comply wit the due expection.

Agree with you

The former EGCs in comparison to this one were quicker in reporting the results.

Thank you volunteers & thank you participants !!!!!!!!!

I am grateful to all who have replied to this thread. To me it shows that all have a great interest and passion for the game. It is very positive to see that the attitude to organizing an European Championship should be professional. However, professionalism within the world of go is something that has mainly been seen within Asia. In my opinion the facilities offered to this European Congress have been of a high standard. We must however not forget that to deliver a fully professional organization a much higher budget would be needed. A complete team of volunteers, some of them working for over 3 years on the project, cannot be held accountable for not satisfying everyone's wishes. In my opinion the volunteers have done a tremendous job and I have seen mainly very satisfied participants. Being a dutchmen I acknowledge the need to moan, since we Dutch also have tendency to complain even when everything is going well. I thank all the volunteer and the participants for making this event a great succes, that I think it is. All that remains for me is to hope that future EGC's will step up to the challenge of making this into a truly professional event. Support from all stakeholders will be indispensible to achieve this. So no excuses from me and no more comments just a great big

THANK YOU to ALL

Zoutehond

Nice

It seems EGC 2009 was a success in Groningen especially among the participants.
The world audience was rather anxious and jealous of being there.
So the wall list was an essential channel to connect Groningen and wishful go players in the world.

Thank you for your hard work.

Are there any SGF files of

Are there any SGF files of games played on EGF? If not, you might think about putting them...
